Banana bread is a favorite snack in nearly any home because it's sweet without being too sweet and works well for breakfast, lunch or as an in-between meal snack. As with many baked goods, however, there are a few ingredients in banana bread that are not the healthiest if you're counting carbs or counting calories. However, there are a few quick changes you can make to make banana bread slightly healthier. Banana bread still will be a carbohydrate, so if you're attempting the ketogenic or Atkins diet, it'll still be off the list for you, but you can bring down its overall sugar and fat content by making some changes.

How to Make Simple Substitutions When You're Baking Banana Bread

If you already have a favorite banana bread recipe that you're fond of using, but you don't like its high fat or sugar content, you can make a few adjustments without sacrificing the taste of your great-grandma's famous banana bread recipe. Generally speaking, there are a few things you can swap out easily, without having to perform too many calculations or think too hard about it.

First of all, you can always substitute whole-wheat flour for white flour. Not only is whole wheat naturally lower in calories, but it also naturally has more vitamins than regular white flour. Another variation you can perform is to make your own oat flour. You can do this by grinding up oats in a food processor. Use the same amount of oat flour you would if you were using regular white flour.

You can also use maple syrup to substitute for regular sugar. A good rule of thumb is to use 3/4 cup of maple sugar for every one cup of sugar. Remember — a cornerstone of banana bread is to mix dry ingredients in one bowl and wet ingredients in another, mixing them together at the very end. Maple sugar would instead go in with the "wet" ingredients like the eggs.

You can also use coconut oil for sticks of butter, but this calculation is slightly more difficult. Every 1/2 cup of butter is 8 tablespoons, which is one standard stick of butter. This is also equal to 113 grams. For each stick of butter, you would substitute roughly 3.5 ounces coconut oil plus slightly more than 1 tablespoon milk.

Healthy Recipes for Banana Bread

A great and healthy recipe for banana bread is as follows: 1/3 cup coconut oil (you can also use vegetable oil or olive oil), 1/2 cup maple syrup, 2 eggs, 1 cup mashed ripe bananas (equal to two to three medium-sized bananas), 1/4 cup milk or water, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 3/4 cups whole wheat flour, and optional 1/2 cup of mix-ins like chopped nuts or carob chips.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan. In a large bowl, mix the oil and maple sugar together with a whisk. Next, add the bananas, milk or water and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix the dry ingredients. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients slowly. If you're adding mix-ins, add them last. Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 55 to 60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean when removed.

Another good hint to keep in mind is to use overly ripe (brown or black bananas). This will sweeten the bread naturally without adding extra sugar and give you a reason to use bananas you're about to throw away. You can also substitute honey for maple sugar if you'd like.

Be sure not to use baking powder in place of baking soda as they are not the same thing, and the banana bread will not come out properly.

How to Make Vegan or Gluten-free Banana Bread

If you'd like to make vegan or gluten-free banana bread, it's possible. To make gluten-free banana bread, you would use gluten-free flour in place of whole-wheat or white flour. There isn't gluten found in any of the other ingredients.

To make banana bread vegan, use coconut oil or another type of oil instead of butter. When the recipe calls for milk, use water instead. You can use a non-dairy milk, such as almond milk or oat milk.

One of the more common ways to replace eggs in recipes is with bananas, but that won't work here. Instead, use either flax eggs, or use 1/4 cup applesauce for every one egg that the recipe you're using requires.
